Look at it like this and take the lead from other sports ,as this selection and development system is already in place

 

Football : You play for your sponsered team ( that is paying your salary ) and then can get selected to play for the  Pro Bowl team

 

Basketball : Pro players can play for the US Olympic Team if selected

 

Professional cycling : US Olympic team selection is from a variety of pro teams

 

College athletics :  Athletes play for their college and then can be selected for other teams

 

I think that the USAT Team should look at the possibility of only selecting its team members ( with maybe one or two slots via an independent trade team selection process ) from other " trade teams " this way they can get the best of the best from the sponsered teams. This system would create more interest and development of the sponsered trade teams, allow for a systematic advancement of athletes performing well to be placed onto a USAT sponsered team.

 

I think the US sports culture is  well steeped in the format that Pro teams train and develop the athletes and these athletes in turn welcome the opportunity to represent the USA in International, World and Olympic comeptittions
